When she awakened once again at 3:02 a.m. that night, Advika opened Instagram and found the phone number that Lucia had texted her. She copied the number, then stared at the photo of Lucia and Evie for several moments before closing the app and sending Lucia a text message: Where and when can we meet?
CHAPTER FIFTEEN
The Goodbye Girl
ADVIKA CROSSED HER LEGS, PLACING her ankle at her knee, giving up on trying to get her feet to touch the floor. The overstuffed zebra-print sofa in Lucia Telloâs living room was so high off the floor that Advika had the sensation she was floating on a cloud. While Lucia was in the kitchen, Advika examined her home, whose modest square footage housed some striking pieces, from the sofa Advika was seated on to the white baby grand piano in the corner to the adult-sized stone vase that seemed to come straight off the lot of an action-adventure movie. The apartment definitely looked like the home of someone who had been steadily employed in Hollywood on the outskirts of stardom without ever landing a breakout role.
After she had messaged Lucia and agreed to visit her home in Glendale the following morning, she had immediately Googled her. Lucia had a supporting role as a nosy neighbor in a very popular comedy franchise in the mid-1980s, and she guest starred on numerous legal and medical dramas in the â90s and early 2000s before becoming an acting coach.
âDo you still act?â Advika asked as Lucia came in with a tray of coffee mugs and a platter of multicolored macarons.
âOn occasion,â Lucia said, settling in beside her. âI dip my toe in acting now and then to keep my SAG card. And because I miss it sometimes.â
âI see,â Advika said, still finding it hard to believe she was having coffee with Evieâs close friend and someone who had met Julian before he had become a Hollywood superproducer.
âSo,â Lucia said. âHow much time do you have?â
Advika shrugged, feeling her face redden. If she had wanted to seem busy and important, she would have given a window of time. But now that Oliveâs house-sitting gig was ending, Advika had all the time in the world and nowhere to be. So she responded, âAs much time as you have.â
Lucia nodded. As they both sipped their coffees, Advika snuck glimpses of her. With her dark, short-cropped hair, oversized black silk top, and silver leather pants, she was a very tall, and very tanned, carbon copy of Liza Minnelli. Advika felt like a slouchy teenager in comparison, having decided to look and dress like the old version of herself when meeting Lucia, wearing minimal makeup, a green peasant top, and cutoff jean shorts, relics from a life when she had shopped at Forever 21. When she had first arrived, Advika had felt embarrassed by how underdressed she was for such an important meeting. But Lucia had treated her warmly, enveloping her in a long, perfumed hug. Advika should have been more shocked
